Some notes and observations from the last day of open training camp practice

DRESS CODE: Shorts and shells

OVERVIEW: The Saints practiced inside the Superdome in a further effort to get used to the environment and lighting.

ATTENDANCE: Safety Terrell Burgess was present in uniform but didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice. CB Alontae Taylor, G Trevor Penning and DT John Ridgeway remained sidelined. All watched from the sideline in street clothes, with Penning wearing a walking boot.

ALIGNMENT NOTABLES: Cornerbacks Quincy Riley and Rejzohn Wright were working with the 2s, with Rico Payton on the third team.

QB WATCH: The Saints let Spencer Rattler take the first set of first-team reps today. He got most of the work with that group, though Tyler Shough did rotate in and get some work with the group.

Rattler’s day started off a little spotty. He did not connect on any of his four attempts in 7-on-7s, but he got rolling during team drills, hitting on his first 11 attempts. His 12th attempt was a dropped pass by Alvin Kamara, and Jayden Price broke up the 13th. And then he locked back in. Rattler put the ball over the field, connecting passes at various depth, including a 25-yard strike to Chris Olave for a touchdown over Rico Payton during a 2-minute drill. He finished the day 17-for-20.

Tyler Shough went 6-for-12, with his best play coming when he scrambled out of the pocket to the left and hit a throw on the move up the sideline to Dante Pettis on third down.

One of Shough’s misses came when Clyde Edwards-Helaire dropped a pass.

Overall, it felt like Rattler had the more productive day.

DIFFERENT LOOKS: The Saints worked on some exotic stuff on offense, some new wrinkles that were both different and exciting to see. The kind of stuff that would surprise another team. We’re not allowed to share strategy or trick plays or anything, so that one is going to have to stay under the cap for now.

FOR THE WIN: Charlie Smyth hit a 58-yard field goal to deliver the “win” to the offense at the end of practice.
