Jake Haener to be sidelined for a few weeks
Jake Haener suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder during Wednesday’s organized team activity and is likely to be sidelined for a few practices, according to a source.
The injury likely means that Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough will get the majority of the reps throughout the rest of organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. The team has a total of seven practices remaining in the summer schedule, including Thursday’s practice, which will be open to the media.
Kellen Moore recently said that Shough, Rattler and Haener would all compete for the starting quarterback job. While the door is open for anyone to win the job, Rattler and Shough are the presumed frontrunners. The runner-up in that two-man race will likely serve as the top backup. Haener, a former fourth-round pick, is also competing with undrafted rookie Hunter Dekkers for a role.
Haener has consistently performed well in practices and training camp, but hasn’t quite had that translate into on-field success in games. He got the opportunity to start one game last year against Washington, but was pulled after the first half. Rattler finished that game and nearly led New Orleans to a comeback victory.
